The climate crisis is at our door-step, yet fossil-fuel projects like the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast pipelines ravage Virginia. These pipelines further lock our state in an unsustainable energy grid that will only expedite climate disaster, but there are still new proposed pipeline projects coming our way. They’re waiting on key permits that Governor Northam has the power to stop. Don’t let him tolerate two pipelines Virginia doesn’t need.

The Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines have threatened community safety, ignored people’s outrage, violated permits and environmental regulations. This goes to show that pipeline companies will always choose profit over people and the environment.

Governor Northam,

I urge you to publicly oppose and reject permits for two new proposed pipeline projects coming to Virginia called the Transcontinental (Transco) Southeastern Trail Expansion and the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) Southgate Extension.

The United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) predicts we have eleven years to drastically reduce our greenhouse gas emissions in order to retain a 2/3rd chance of avoiding climate change’s irreversible impacts like severe droughts, extreme flooding, and high sea-level rise. To stick to this timeline, Virginia must be a leader and stop the build-out of fossil fuel infrastructure. If built, the Transco Southeastern Trail Expansion and MVP Southgate Extension will emit methane, a greenhouse gas 90 times more potent than carbon at warming the Earth relative to a short time frame, and expedite climate disaster.
 
On top of that, these fossil-fuel projects will increase the amount of natural gas being transported putting communities at an increased risk for dangerous spills, leaks, and explosions. They’ll also threaten clean air and water because pipelines inevitably leak methane and compressor station modifications will produce more air pollutants.
 
The Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines have shown that pipeline developers historically mismanage their construction by violating key permits and environmental regulations. In fact, the owner of the Transco Southeastern Trail Expansion Project, was responsible for a 2008 pipeline explosion in Appomattox, VA. Considering the histories of pipeline developers in our state, and fossil-fuel project’s role in accelerating the climate crisis and risking the health of people and the environment, I demand you oppose and reject permits for the Transco Southeastern Trail Expansion and the MVP Southgate Extension.
